Oral pathogens, suchasEikenella corrodens, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, andPorphyromonas gingivalis, possess fimbriae thathave beenimplicated inbacterial adhesion andinvasion. These fimbriae arepotential virulence factors inoral infectious processes. A. actinomycetemcomitans andE.corrodens haveType4-like fimbriae, whereas P.gingivalis displays aunique typeoffimbriae. Todate, fim- briae oftheoral primary colonizers, Actinomyces naeslundii andStreptococcus parasanguis, represent theonlyfimbriae characterized for anyGram-positive bacteria. Theputative major fimbrial subunits, FimAandFimPofA.naeslundii andFapIofS.parasanguis, contain asignal sequence andcell-wall-sortin g signal. Thepresence ofextensive dipeptide repeats inFapImakesitunique amongfim- brial molecules. Basedonexperimental data, anucleation/precipitation pathway isproposed forfimbrial biogenesis ofbothS. parasanguis andA.naeslundii, although wecannot rule outanalternative covalent linkage model.
