- W2182545716 abstract "Colony-performance data from 15 years resulted in a h²=0.03 for honey. This low value is discussed in the light of the very special way the genome of a colony is passed through into the next generation of colonies. The genomic contents of a colony is defined as: 2 + N-males alle- les at each locus, resulting in more complex heritability than Mendelian. Breeding for economical important traits with honeybees (e.g. honey) always means judging the colony-performances and using those data for decision-mak- ing. The diploid queen mates with up to 25 haploid males. The worker-bees of a colony are all daughters of their queen and one of the males the queen mated with. The up to 25 groups of super-sisters take their part of the workload, which results in the colony-performance observed. Using a colony as breeder has a twofold meaning: 1. The colony produces males from unfertilized eggs of the queen (and of the worker bees), and 2. The colony produces young queens, each genetically comparable to just a worker-bee. Breeding is based on the assumption to be able to shift the population mean of the offspring by selecting parents with heritable qualities better as the mean of the parent-population. One of the constraints for this theory to work is the way the observed quality is passed through to the next generation. The situation in honeybee societies being not simple plain Mendelian inheritance motivated Moritz to the question 'Selection in Superorganisms: Too Complex to Study?' (Moritz & Southwick 1992, p. 317)." @default.
