- W2182772082 abstract "This chapter investigates the pineal glands in seven mammalian species using a specific and highly sensitive fluorescence method for the cellular localization of certain biogenic monoamines. The chapter discusses the cellular localization of certain biogenic monoamines in the pineal glands of these animals to elucidate any common features of the topography of the adrenergic nerves, the nature of the pineal monoamines, and the distribution of the amine(s) between nerves and pineal parenchymal cells. The chapter compares fluorescence microscopical analyses of pineals from normal animals with those from the animals subjected to various pharmacological and surgical treatments. In the golden hamster, rabbit, cat, sheep, cattle, and pig pineal, sympathetic nerve fibers store a primary catecholamine, whereas those of the guinea pig contain a tryptamine, probably 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). In the pineal glands of the hamster and the cat, the intrapineal adrenergic nerves are distributed around vessels, as well as in the parenchyma. In the guinea pig, they are found almost exclusively around vessels, while in the rabbit and the sheep, nerve fibers are mainly confined to the parenchyma. Only very few isolated adrenergic nerves are found in cattle and pig." @default.
