- W2182904756 abstract "Professionalization increases standardization, bureaucratic norms, and (arguably) greater accountability. Some argue that the private foundation landscape is undergoing a maelstrom of professionalization, with increasing isomorphism across the field (Frumkin, 1999). This paper questions this assumption, and asks, instead, what norms inform private foundation structures and practices. Following a review of the goals literature from organizational sociology, this paper utilizes Perrow’s (1961) concept of operative goals and Blau and Scott’s (1962) concept of cui bono – who the organization has been created to serve – to create a framework of four ideal type organizational goals: pursuing professionalized philanthropy, maintaining family unity, leaving a legacy, and formalizing charitable giving. The paper then illustrates these four types with rich qualitative data from 25 private grantmaking foundations, highlighting the complex relationships between family and philanthropy." @default.
