The coefficient of fr ic tion and wear of th e composites at vari ous appli ed load and slidin g speeds ha ve been determined. The lowest coefficient of friction and wear values observ ed for the fibres oriented in 0°_90° direction and hi ghest are for normal-longi tudinal (N-L) ori e ntation. The applied load furth er increase th e friction and wear of th e composi tes for all ori entation s. The friction and wear behav iour have been dominated by a number of mechani sms. T he wear of the fibres has been dominated by th e fibre fr acture. The fibres have been fractured because of bending o f fibre due to draggin g by the steel di sc in the sliding directi on. The microscopic observati ons of th e worn surfaces revealed and supported th e involved mechanism. Fibre reinforced polymer composites are widely used for many structural applications owing to their high specific modulus and strength. The friction and wear behaviour of fibre reinforced polymer composites have been the subject of intensive study for many years because of its practical importance. The literature reveals that the friction and wear of fibrou s polymeric composites are governed by the type of fibre, their orientation, the matrix resin and the type of fillers used" @default.
