- W218304826 abstract "III. The BibliographersThe Pioneer Bibliography J. Don Vann (bio) In 1965 I had my initiation into Victorian periodicals when I began my dissertation on the critical reception of David Copperfield in London newspapers. At the time the study of periodicals was pretty much virgin territory, but I did have a slight introduction through two of my professors at Texas Tech. Knowing that Alan Lang Strout had done pioneering work on Blackwood's Magazine, I sat down with the run in the library and became immediately hooked. Also, I had an excellent guide in my major professor, Roger Brooks, who had used London newspapers in his dissertation on Matthew Arnold. In 1965 I spent the summer at the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale tracking down reviews of Copperfield and then completed the dissertation in 1967. I was awed by the prospect of the vast unexplored territory of Victorian periodicals with its potential as a source for research in so many disciplines and was thrilled with the announcement of the formation of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals. William E. Fredeman's RSVP: A Proposal for Discussion (VPN, no. 5/6, September 1969, p. 5) listed a series of suggestions, the second of which was A Bibliography of publications on Victorian periodicals might appear as an annual feature of VPN, the preparation of which would be assigned to an elected or appointed RSVP bibliographer. I could see that such an annual list would be valuable to all sorts of researchers, especially those working on the history of particular magazines and newspapers, for annual resources such as Year's Work in English Studies were not detailed enough to indicate casual references to periodicals. Also, I could see that an annual bibliography would be a good indicator of the extent to which periodicals were being used in research, as well as serving, perhaps, to encourage further research. [End Page 48] Serving as RSVP bibliographer interested me, for I had for many years been a contributor to the Modern Humanities Research Association Annual Bibliography of Literature and Language, and I was currently serving as bibliographer for Studies in the Novel , a journal we had recently established at the University of North Texas. Jim Lee, the editor of SN, sent me as a representative of the journal to the organizational meeting of RSVP in New York in October of 1969 (Yes, in those days state universities still had travel budgets). Most of those at the meeting were much like me, newly minted Ph.D.s who had used Victorian periodicals in their research and saw the need for an organization to encourage research and sponsor projects. VPN was then still a true newsletter which we had all avidly read since the appearance of issue no. 1 in January 1968, and we were excited about the many reports of research projects and suggestions of work to be done. Energy was in the air. Having been appointed RSVP bibliographer at the meeting, I immediately began planning the mechanism for compiling the annual checklist. The first task was to make a list of journals in which the information we sought might appear. Right away I saw that surveying this long list was beyond the capability of one person. What was needed was a group of people among whom the titles could be distributed. In VPN no. 8, April 1970, pp. 7-8, I published Toward an Annual Bibliography for RSVP, calling for volunteers to help. As I was getting all of this organized, the University of North Texas announced a new program of development leaves for young scholars (we did not have sabbaticals). I applied for a grant to go to the British Library and was awarded a leave with full pay for the spring semester of 1971. To manage the RSVP committee from London did not seem feasible, so at the RSVP conference in the fall of 1970 I resigned, and Nicholas Salerno of Arizona State University was appointed. I handed over to him all of the materials and a list of twenty volunteers. Because of ill health Professor Salerno was unable to oversee the compiling of the bibliography. In 1973 I was re-appointed, and..." @default.
