• W2183085177 abstract "Smoking is the main avoidable cause of disease and mortality. Ninety percent of smokers are dependent of tobacco. Smoking is also an important cause of other drug addictions. Moreover, smoking is strongly related with other behaviours that damage mental health condition and social relations, including criminality. The large majority of smokers start to smoke during adolescence. All these recognized features and effects of smoking behaviour suggest that this must be the major field for prevention of health, behavioural, emotional and social problems. The objectives of this communication are to present the main determinants of smoking behaviour and to discuss its implication for smoking prevention. Data suggest that the main determinant of smoking is ... smoking. First of all, the first experiences with tobacco, usually in the beginning of adolescence, are important determinants of smoking addiction in the future. On the other hand, smoking behaviour of peers, family and other relevant referents are established determinants of smoking initiation and dependence. Regarding smoking prevention, a main objective should be to avoid or to delay smoking initiation, raising as much barriers as possible to adolescents smoking behaviour. The idea that tobacco smoking is highly addictive must be emphasized and reinforced in campaigns addressed to adolescents. It is important to improve adolescents’ skills to better manage the processes of social influence. Moreover, parents must be approached in order to increase their awareness of how and how much their behaviour could be a bad influence for their children.
