- W2183218062 abstract "A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION in the vista of challenges facing nursing is the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the National Student Nurses' Association. The NSNA was established in 1952 as part of a total reorganization of nursing organizations. It was the brainchild that emerged from dialogues between the NLN and the American Nurses Association. Since its inception, the NSNA has enjoyed continued growth and success. Under the strong leadership of its executive director, Diane Mancino, it socializes nursing students to the professional's responsibilities for the advancement of the profession and its members, along with commitment to the NSNA's mission and the society we serve. A celebratory convention for the organization is planned for early April. As we marshal our resources to respond to today's nursing shortage and focus our strategic planning on fostering a strong cadre of professional nurses, it is fitting that we should pause to congratulate, celebrate, and cheer our students -- the current corps of future nurses. We need to remember that our future resides within our midst in the women and men who are presently studying our profession. The entire educational enterprise in nursing is focused on developing the most qualified workforce possible to meet the needs of our diverse society. We need to be careful lest our zeal to envision a successful future causes shortsightedness about the opportunities and joy that are already present today. Over the course of my career, it has been my privilege to get to know a multitude of students, and I have learned so much from each of them. Indeed, few educators fail to comment on the enduring energy, optimism, and idealism of nursing students. These students espouse the values that we have passed on, and, most importantly, they continue to believe in those values, all the time. Of central relevance is their belief that they can make a difference -- we know that is true! Like all groups, nursing students have their share of grumbles. Among the concerns commonly expressed by nursing students are these -- they do not have enough clinical experiences; the patients they meet in their clinical learning are not challenging enough; there are not enough credits or hours devoted to pharmacology, or pathophysiology, or ethical decision-making, or cultural diversity. In short, what is commonly heard, especially from seniors, is that nursing students are not prepared or ready. What I hear between the lines is that they are afraid that they will not be able to deliver something that a patient needs, when the patient needs it. On the one hand, this is an inspiring notion -- these students are so committed and so caring that they worry about getting it right. No, perfect! On the other hand, their concerns also reflect the demands for perfection placed on them every step of the way. …" @default.
