- W2183274380 abstract "Publisher Summary Researches in the field of polysaccharides have highlighted a group of capsular polysaccharide molecules that possess a unique zwitterionic charge motif in their repeating unit, i.e., they possess both a positive and a negative charge. The presence of this unique chemical structure confers upon these polysaccharides the ability to activate T-cells in a mechanism that was previously thought to be exclusive to protein antigens. This chapter discusses the historical discovery of zwitterionic polysaccharides (ZPSs) as immunomodulators, explores the organisms that have been described expressing ZPS and characterizes their unique chemical structure. Subsequently, the novel mechanisms by which ZPSs can modulate aspects of both the innate and adaptive arms of the host immune response to activate specific T-cell responses are reviewed. Furthermore, the discussion involves the phenotypes of T-cells that are activated and consideration is made of the biological impact of this ZPS-mediated T-cell activation in maintaining a healthy immune system and protecting the host against the development of allergic and autoimmune diseases." @default.
