• W2183401726 abstract "The purpose of this report is to draw attention to some of the major current findings of the Kluane Ecological Monitoring Project (KEMP), with a particular emphasis on those findings that have potential management implications. Because the report is directed at both managers and members of the public, we discuss patterns that are of more general interest or that have management importance. Additionally, we summarize relevant research conducted outside the KEMP project, both in the immediate region and, where appropriate, in the larger Yukon Territory. For more detailed information on any of these topics, we refer you to the references cited. Those readers already familiar with previous annual reports are reminded that information about new findings can be found primarily in the Results and Discussion section that begins on page 7. Most of the information in the front section of the report remains the same from one year to the next in order to provide new readers with a detailed explanation of the objectives and structure of KEMP. In this year’s KEMP report, we are pleased to present an overview article written by Charles J. Krebs with contributions from J. David Henry. Alert Thresholds for KEMP Measurements of Ecosystem Integrity is the fruition of multiple years of monitoring effort and analysis, and has significant implications for Kluane and for monitoring projects elsewhere. Further summaries in this year’s report are also the culmination of long-term monitoring efforts: A piece about carnivore tracking points to how techniques developed in the Kluane region are finding applications further afield, and two articles about Marten take a long view concerning the regional success of this species. In a piece arising from the regional spruce beetle infestation, we look at the implications of white spruce growth rates for forestry and prescribed burns. Three articles deal with ungulate population issues: we look at the implications of advancing alpine treelines for Dall sheep, the ongoing Chisana caribou project and moose surveys from the Dezadeash Range. We also have a report on the progress of the Local Knowledge Interviews conducted as part of the Community Ecological Monitoring Project (CEMP) in Mayo. And finally, we have a brief introduction to research work that is getting underway about exotic plant invasions in the Kluane area.
