• W2183453745 abstract "Visceral leishmaniasis is a public health problem, have enlarged incidence in children. In 2009 Araguaina city – Tocantins was the city with the biggest cases VL. This study aimed to identify the geographical expansion of the VL in Araguaina, identify the epidemiological profile of cases of VL treated at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HDT) in Araguaina, especially in children and people over 60 years old, which represent a risk population for disease severity. From the number of reported cases from 2004 to 2009, maps were drawn about the evolution of geographical distribution of VL in the neighborhoods of Araguaina, was also carried out epidemiological study, laboratory and rolling of VL cases in children and people over 60 years attended in the HDT. Among children, with less than a year,was also evaluated the clinical date. The study used data from the Brazilian Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) cases reported in HDT, in the years 2004 to 2009. 983cases were notified, of which 391 children (39,8%) from zero to five years and of these 71 reports of children under one years (18%). In the same period were reported 22 cases of VL in adults over 60 years (2.2%). Most reports were from the Araguaina city (62,5%). VL cases occurred in most neighborhoods in Araguaina, started in central districts and then expanded into the suburbs, where they made the largest number of cases. With regard to sex of patients, the was a low incidence in males, mainly aged over 60 years. The diagnosis of VL was confirmed by laboratory tests in the most cases, but was obtained the serological diagnosis, that isn’t the best diagnostic method. Initial treatment of most patients was with pentavalent antimoniate. Most of patients progressed to healing. This study demonstrates the geographical spread of VL in Araguaina, affecting mainly children." @default.
