- W2183483363 abstract "SUMMARY An alkalizing treatment, which lasted for a few weeks, with 3.1 g/l of sodium lactate dissolved in the feeding water of specimens of Triturus cristatus carnifex (Laurenti) (Amphibia Urodela), brings about highly noticeable phenomena of hypertrophy and hyperplasia in distal tubule cells of the nephrons, strictly confined to the area that faces the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle, i.e. in the classical position where, in the higher vertebrates, the macula densa (MD) is situated. Our findings demonstrate that this structure is present in this amphibian, although under normal conditions it is not easily recognizable, and confirm the correlation between this structure and sodium metabolism; we can in fact exclude the possibility that its reaction depends upon the lactate ion, as an identical experiment we effected using calcium lactate did not alter its normal appearance at all. Considering that the treatment with 1.6 g/l of NaCl, which has approximately the same concentration of Na+ as the previo..." @default.
