- W2183628241 abstract "SUMMARY Increasing numbers of children and adolescents are using illegal psychoactive substances, while the age of onset for substance use is falling. This increases the risk of developing a substance use disorder. Methods: Selective review of recent literature, taking account of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) guidelines. Results: Substance use disorders involving illegal psychoactive substances are, with a prevalence of 5 to 6 %, now among the epidemiologically important psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. Including alcohol related disorders, the prevalence rises up to 15 to 18 %. A majority of users discontinue substance use during the transition to adulthood. Of particular relevance for primary care physicians are those children and adolescents who, against a background of risk factors such as psychosocial disadvantage or genetic predisposition, persist in substance use. In this group, the rate of comorbidities requiring treatment ist very high (> 60 %). Dtsch Arztebl 2007; 104(28–29): A 2061–70" @default.
