- W2183634361 abstract "Probabilistic analysis of drought severity plays an important role in evaluation of drought phenomenon in order to implement water resource management practices at different levels (local and regional). Two major characteristics of drought are duration (interval between beginning and end) and severity (total of lack of water resources, raining here, duration). Drought severity issue was studied in the present investigation and critical drought was defined as droughts greater than a certain threshold of severity of drought. Moreover, return period of drought was defined as interval between two consecutive critical droughts. The present investigation was aimed to compare basic and series methods in evaluation of return period of agricultural drought severity in Tehran province. To do this, monthly statistics of temperature and rainfall were collected from stations of Meteorological Agency and Department of Energy in Tehran province. Early assessment demonstrate that the best station can be identified using a 20-year period from 1989 to 2008. After quality control and reconstruction of missing data, Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) was calculated using rainfall and potential evapotranspiration data (with Turenth-White method) as agricultural drought index in a 3 to 12-month time windows. Afterwards, wet and dry periods were calculated from RDI time series at the stations. Fitting of probability distribution of drought intensity values at each of the stations demonstrated that Gamma distribution had better fit to the data in comparison with other statistical distributions in most of the stations. Eventually, drought risk were calculated and compared based on to attitudes of series (dependent and independent) and basic (individual). Therefore, dependent series methods had better response time to drought risk management behaviors." @default.
