- W2183639230 abstract "Our knowledge of the Earth's interior has grown rapidly over the past several decades by careful interpretation of geophysical observations. Our very limited means of access to the Earth's interior has made the quest for knowledge about its constitution and the nature of the processes that take place there one of the most fascinating and challenging areas of geologic investigation. In spite of the limited means of access, methods of geophysical observation have improved dramatically with new techno logical developments in recent years, especially in the area of data reduc tion by computers. Methods of geophysical observation include study of the behavior of elastic waves traversing the Earth (seismology), the dimensions of the Earth (geodesy), the motion of the Earth (celestial mechanics), and measure ment of heat flow, gravity, and magnetism, as well as direct studies of materials thought to have been thrust up from the Earth's interior in the form of volcanic nodules, ophiolites, and mid-ocean ridges. The interpretation of these observations, however, depends to a large extent on another branch of geophysics which has also undergone some remarkable advances in recent years, namely experimental geophysics. Experimental geophysics encompasses that area of endeavor devoted to the investigation of the properties of the materials believed to exist within the Earth's interior at the conditions believed to prevail within the Earth's interior. Without this information, it would have been impossible to piece together as complete a picture as we have today. The desire to generate within the laboratory conditions which accurately simulate conditions within the Earth has been the driving force for some" @default.
