- W2183678356 abstract "In 1991, I asked Walter Hudson, an eminent social work researcher and developer of practice management software, what advice he would give doctoral students interested in developing computer software. Walter replied that specializing in information technology (IT) was risky for one’s career. He stated: “the existing structure we have for rewarding and recognizing creative work in our universities is an impediment to the development of computer technology… I am utterly confident that 15 years from now we will be so far ahead of ourselves that we won’t recognize what we’re doing today (CUSSN, 1991).” Since that interview, a lot has changed in human services IT. For example, the Web did not exist in 1991. So, have human services made the leap forward that Walter predicted? This article will review our current situation by examining the good, the bad, and the ugly involved with human services IT. This article is an “opinion piece.” It is not based on research, but on my perceptions and experience. Consequently, some of the advice might be on target, while some may be myopic due my immersion in the field. As with most things involving IT, the “buyer beware” label belongs on this article." @default.
