Moreover, AC losses inthecable require higher refrigeration powertokeepsuperconducting wires at lowtemperatures. Comparatively, DC HTS cables would eliminate Y2Rlosses during DC powertransmission. The systemmay instead beoperated atoptimumgeneration voltages without reducing current levels. Thereisnoreactive powerandvirtually noloss intheinsulation, leaving onlythe heatleakasa losssource. Thedielectric strength ofthe insulation isbetter aswell. Allthese makethedesign and optimization ofDCHTScables muchless complex thaninthe AC case. ItcanbeseenthatDC HTS cable isthemost suitable choice forhigh-power transmission ofelectrical energy. Inthepaper, experimental investigations werecarried out forcommercial NPT/PTIGBTdevices from77K to300K. Thesignificant improvement wasobserved ontheir static and dynamic qualities atlowtemperatures. Basedontheresults, a novelconcept andlayout ofcryogenic VSC-HVDCsystem werepresented tolinktwoAC networks. Thedetail ina bipolar HTS DC cable usedforitwasdescribed fromits configuration, electric dielectric, energylosses andthe operation. Thecontrol strategy ofcryogenic VSC-HVDCwas analyzed bytaking account ofthestability ofHTScable under fault conditions. Transient characteristic ofsuchasystem was shownbycomputer simulation whenHTS DC lines fault. Finally, somekeyproblems ofHTSDCcable werediscussed." @default.
