- W2184111682 abstract "Pest insects cause serious problems in worldwide at stored products. Synthetic conventional insecticides play a major role in insect pest elimination in stored products. However, negative effects of synthetic chemicals are known and there is need to safer alternatives. One of the most promising methods is essential oil-based pest control. Essential oils are natural volatile compounds produced by aromatic plants and have a wide range of effect on pest insects. Sideritis perfoliata L. was collected from Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Essential oil was isolated from aerial parts of the plant using a Clevenger-type apparatus. Essential oil yield was 0.55% (v/w). Chemical composition of the essential oil was determined using CS-MS analysis. The major components were α-pinene (64.47%), β-phellandrene (12.84%) and β-pinene (12.14%). Insecticidal activity of S. perfoliata essential oil on two important pest insects, Acanthoscelides obtectus and Tribolium castaneum were also tested. Increasing concentrations of the essential oil caused a significant increase in mortality rates of A. obtectus and T. castaneum adults at 24 h exposure period. Essential oil caused 100% mortality on A. obtectus adults at 70 and 140 µL L -1 air concentrations. S. perfoliata essential oil showed 76.7% mortality on the T. castaneum adults at 70 µL L -1 air concentration. Furthermore, mortality rate was reached to 100% at the highest concentration (140 µL L -1 air). According to the result of this study, S. perfoliata essential oil can be used as an alternative natural insecticide to currently used conventional synthetic insecticides in agricultural applications." @default.
