- W2184332676 abstract "Publisher Summary Progress in cognitive science and the development of noninvasive techniques such as electrophysiology have permitted extensive, ongoing mapping, and differentiation of sensory and cognitive systems in the mature human brain. This chapter reiterates that the event-related potential (ERP) technique has been, and will continue to be, indispensable in informing about development and how age and experience contribute to the adult-like mosaic of neurocognitive systems. Within the visual system, there is a structural and functional segregation of motion and location information from color and form information along “dorsal” and “ventral” processing streams, respectively. An understanding of the normal development of the dorsal and ventral visual streams could provide clues as to how and why auditory deprivation affects dorsal stream functions more than ventral stream functions. This chapter indicates that the basic measure of infant face recognition is the ability to discriminate the face of its own mother from the face of another woman. It also demonstrates that although there is overlap in the systems involved in face processing from early school years to adulthood, age and experience affect the functioning and distribution of this network in significant ways." @default.
