- W2184509831 abstract "OF THE Jurassic rocks in central Utah have had a profound effect on the tectonic development of this part of the Cordil- leran foreland thrust belt. Intense internal deformation of the Twist Gulch and Arapien Formations, coupled with poor surface exposures in critical areas, has resulted in a wide variety of explanations to account for the structural complexity of fhe region, ranging from a series of compressional and extensional events to salt diapirism on a large scale. Drill-hole data, seismic reflection profiling, and gravity surveys are utilized along with surface geology to pro pose a regional tectonic synthesis that satisfactorily explains much of the structuralgeometry of central Utah. An informal revision of the Twist Gulch and Arapien Formations is based on two wells on the Gunnison Plateau that contain the most complete undeformed sections of Jurassic rocks hitherto recognized in the study area. The Upper Jurassic Twist Gulch is correlated with the SummervilletCurtis and Stump, and the Middle Jurassic Arapien with the EntradelCarmel and the PreusslTwin Creek Creek of eastern and northern Utah, respectively. Thickness of the Twist Gulch is about 500 ft (152 m) and the Arapien averages about 5,580 ft (1,702 m) in the Gunnison Plateau region. Areal distribution of ewaporites in the Arapien does not support either the concept of a deep, Jurassic rift basin in central Utah or hypotheses of widespread salt diapirism affecting rocks overlying the Arapien. Regional cross sections demonstrate that major eastward-directed thrusting affected central Utah east of the Gunnison Plateau and Sevier Valley in the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene. The Navajo Sandstone is structurally high in areas where the overlying Arapien crops out extensively, further evidence against the role of salt diapirism. West- ward-directed thrusting (back-thrusting) is a major influence on the structural geometry of the Sanpete Valley area, and may be of a regional significance. The compressional deformation is overprinted by late Tertiary to Recent extensional faulting and folding. Listric normal faults in many cases follow old thrust surfaces or steeply dipping pre-Tertiary bedding planes. Jurassic rocks have behaved as a relatively incompetent unit between two competent units during deformation, resulting in the disharmonic folding and structural complexity characteristic of these rocks. The nature of the deformation in central Utah is not unique to this area, but is seen in Jurassic rocks from southwest- ern Wyoming to southwestern Utah. The Jurassic Morrison Formation is believed not to extend west of the Wasatch Plateau. Some rocks previously assigned to the Upper Cretaceous lndianola Group, on the Gunnison Plateau, contain Lower Cretaceous palyno- morphs. The sequence is correlated with the Cedar Mountain Formation of eastern Utah." @default.
