• W2184595963 abstract "This study investigates the relationship amongst socio-demographics, people activities, and trip chaining (tour) characteristics through a simultaneous model applying the structural equation modeling system (SEM). The data in this paper are drawn from time-use survey in Torino conducted by Italian National Statistics Institute (ISTAT) in 2003. For better evaluating the tour-mode choice, some new variables were defined on the basis of Torino time-use data such as tour type frequencies, number of trips per day, work-tour and non-work tour travel time, tour-mode frequencies, activities duration (i.e. in-home and out-of-home duration). The SEM modeling system allows identifying the direct and indirect effects of the specified variables on users’ modal choice and the frequency of tour-mode choice during their daily activities. The analysis of the relationships between in-home and out-of-home activities was determined to better understand how individuals organize their daily time and how such organization affects travel behaviors, particularly their daily travel mode. As well as the interaction between trip chaining characteristics was determined to reveal their impacts on frequency of using transport modes as the tour-mode. In addition, the effects of sociodemographics on individuals’ activity participation and trip chaining characteristics were captured as exogenous variables impacts. The achieved results provide valuable intuition about the causal relation between socio-demographics, activity participation and trip chaining characteristics in daily tour-mode choice in Torino. For instance, results show positive effect of number of work tours on frequency of using car and public transport and negative effect on frequency of active mode (Bike and Walk). As well, number of education tours has a positive effect on the frequency of Public transport and active mode. It means that individuals with large number of education tours use active mode and Public transport more frequently than other transport modes, which implies students’ tendency for using Public transport and active mode compared with other transport mode.
