- W2184678432 abstract "In recent years strandings of members of the ziphidae family has been closely related to military maneuvers. Looking for organs that can be excited by the midrange sonars frequency in the 3000-7000 Hz range the acoustical engineer will look for a fluid cavity 40 cm long and for very thin bones. In the Cuviers ziphius both things are placed together and connected to the tympanic bulla. They are the ziphius mandible and the mandibular fat bodies. In this work we present first the experimental characterization of the mandible bone as a compression wave transmitter and a comparative study with other seven toothed whales in the waters of Canaries which could, presumably, have been subjected to the same sonar. At the end, the bending behaviour of the bone coupled with the fat bodies modelled by me ans of a finite element program is presented. Experimental and numerical works show that the Cuviers ziphius can be especially sensitive in the sonar frequency range." @default.
