- W2184766505 abstract "Numerous medical economists and behavioral scientists argue that the most cost effective approach to the delivery of health care services would be in the development of further efforts to increase life-style change and adher ence to prescribed medical regimes ( 1 --4). Crucial emphasis in this thrust is the alteration of behaviors related to the development of morbidity and mortality in the major disease categories. One expectation in the use of medical technology for secondary prevention has not been fulfilled, in that there is no evidence that it has altered the life expectancy profile within the United States in the last twenty years. Influencing the associated behavioral and environmental factors should improve the life expectancies of individuals under the age of 70 (5). This thesis is based upon the fact that the major sources of loss of life and more specifically, loss of working life, due to premature death are accidents, arterial diseases, cancer, and respiratory diseases. Table 1 depicts the behav ioral and environmental factors associated with death rates from these conditions (6). Because all of the categories have defined behavioral and environmental factors associated with them, attention to the alteration of these behavioral and environmental risk factors could in fact alter the course of the disease, or, in the case of accidents, homicide, and suicide, reduce the occurrence of the events.
