- W2184903899 abstract "The utilization of cereal tissue culture techniques in crop improvement requires methods for efficient plant regeneration and screening of regenerants for desired genetic variability. In this review, studies on rice, maize and triticale for high frequency callus induction and plant regeneration from different explants, successfully established in this laboratory, are described. Since regenerating ability in rice is generally lost after 90 days in culture, methods have been developed that employ osmoregulators like sorbitol, mannitol, to enhance and retain regenerating ability even after 1500 days in culture. In maize, somatic embryogenesis has been induced and factors like nitrates, hormones, media, sucrose, etc. affecting embryogenic callus formation studied. In triticale, screening and evaluation of regenerated plant progenies resulted in some promising somaclones of agronomic importance. These studies should be useful in the selection of desirable mutants at cellular level, and genetic modification through protoplast fusion and gene transfer." @default.
