- W2185096188 abstract "Proxy servers can be used to stream video stored at a geographically separate location. This separation between the proxy server and the storage introduces a non-negligible delay in retrieving video frames in real time. We develop an effective scheme to achieve consistent, high streaming under such delays. Central to the scheme is the control of buffer occupancy at the proxy server. We model the buffer as a bilinear dynamical system disturbed by a point process with stochastic state-dependent intensity, reflecting the behavior of an additive-increase/multiplicative-decrease transport protocol. Using the buffer model, we construct two controllers based on prediction of future system states, taking into account both the delay and the state-dependent disturbance. Our empirical study illustrates the effectiveness of the scheme and shows that the controllers exploiting the buffer model perform well in overcoming the adverse impact of the retrieval delay. I. INTRODUCTION Proxy servers can be used in delivering video, stored at a distant location, to clients. Figure 1 illustrates such a scenario. Video frames are stored at the central storage. During streaming, the proxy retrieves frames from the central storage, transcodes the frames to fit the varying bandwidth of the local- area network (LAN), and transmits them to clients via the LAN. We wish to achieve consistent, high streaming for such scenarios. By quality consistency, we mean smooth changes in quality. Abrupt changes results in flickering dis- play, annoying to viewers. High visual is also reflected in the throughput and the packet loss rate. Our approach to attain high throughput and low loss rates is through intelligent buffer control exercised at the proxy server. We assume that an additive-increase/multiplicative-decrease (AIMD) transport protocol supports the streaming application, for several reasons. First, an AIMD protocol stabilizes the network, crucial for healthy network operation. (The Transmis- sion Control Protocol (TCP), dominant in the Internet, is an AIMD protocol.) Second, its behavior allows tractable mathe- matical characterization, enabling a control-theoretic analysis of the problem. Finally, an AIMD protocol can easily be tuned to be TCP-friendly, a highly desirable property. The retrieval delay (also called control delay) and the stochastic wide-band variation of the drain rate (determined by the underlying AIMD protocol) greatly complicate the buffer control. We formulate the buffer-control problem as This research is supported by NSF under contracts ECS-0098089, ANI-" @default.
