- W2185251275 abstract "SUMMARY Themicrovasculature was investigated inthenormalbowelandinulcerative colitis andCrohn's disease. Tissue samples frompostoperative colectomy specimens inwhichthe microvasculature hadbeenperfused withbariumsulphate suspension were examined. Microradiography was usedtostudyintramural vascular patternwhich was abnormal inboth disease states. A recently described radiograph fluorescence systemwas usedtoestimate barium concentration andhencemicrovascular volumeintissue samples. Highly significant negative correlations were demonstrated between barium concentration andageinnormalbowel(n=44; r= -0-669; p<0001)andinsegmental Crohn's disease (n=11;r=-0-698; p=0017). Barium concentration was significantly reduced (p<0-05) in segmental Crohn's disease (n=11)but remained normal indiffuse Crohn's disease ofthecolon(n=6)andulcerative colitis (n=7). Itis postulated thatischaemia may bea factor inthepathogenesis ofsegmental Crohn's disease in olderpatients. Lesions ofthesmall intramural vessels inthecolon havebeenshowntobeacause ofcolonic ischaemia. ' Thereishistological evidence ofsmall vessel disease insomecasesofulcerative colitis andCrohn's disease,2 3butthefunctional significance ofthe vascular changes inthese conditions isuncertain. It ispossible thatischaemia mayplayapartinthe pathogenesis ofinflammatory boweldisease. The purpose ofthepresent study wastoinvestigate the intestinal microvasculature in non-specific inflammatory boweldisease. Methods SPECIMENS INVESTIGATED" @default.
