- W2185254601 abstract "Until recently, the concept of embodiment has received a ‘bad press’ in Western social science. Increasingly, it is seen as a potential means of avoiding the epistemological and ontological differentiation of sociodemographic differences, such as gender and ethnicity. This paper is based on a doctoral study that sets out to explore the narratives of Bangladeshi women setting up in businesses in inner-city London. It is interested in how, through their stories, the women make sense of becoming business women. It is interested in the transformation of their identities, as entrepreneurs, as followers of Islam, as women, and as members of ethnic communities? It is interested in exploring their identities in a manner that avoids the challenges inherent in some feminist and postmodernist perspectives - whereby notions of gender and ethnicity have been increasingly difficult to analyse within a cohesive approach. Feminist and postmodernist perspectives have been criticized for an overemphasis upon different subjectivities - often to the detriment of a common notion of ‘womanhood’ and the potential for emancipatory politics. Both approaches have been criticised for their commitment to the epistemological notion that knowledge derives from identity, giving an individual the right to speak by virtue of whom she is. Both approaches have been criticised for their tendencies towards essentialism, whether of a biological or discursive nature. This paper explores the notion of embodiment as a starting point for the consideration gender and ethnicity that avoids the aforementioned challenges. It draws on the germinal works of George Herbert Mead, Simone de Beauvoir, Michael Foucault, and Merleau-Ponty, as well as the writings of contemporary thinkers, such as Linda Alcoff and Ian Burkett." @default.
