- W2185284423 abstract "Two years ago, a method was presented to evaluate the temperature of individual thermo-liquid crystal (TLC) tracer particles by evaluating their color images. In this paper, several improvements to this method are presented, ranging from the experimental setup to the evaluation methods, as well as the capability to reliably evaluate the color of astigmatically defocused images. First, a state-of-the art light source, which provides a balanced illumination spectrum was used instead of a high power flash lamp whose light spectrum has intensity deficiencies in wide wavelength bands. Second, taking advantage of the particular optical characteristics of TLCs, a circular polarization filter was used remove background noise from the images of the flow. Furthermore, this filter reduces inhomogeneity, reflections, and halos in and around the particles' color images, yielding particle images with homogeneous intensity profiles, which make the detection of their astigmatically defocused geometries possible. And third, proper orthogonal decomposition was used to produce a set of optimally decorrelated variables space to estimate the temperature of the particles from their RGB intensities captured by the digital camera. Now, the ability to evaluate the color in defocused images allows for the coding of the depth position of the particles in their particle image's geometry, thus allowing for the simultaneous evaluation of their 3D velocity and their temperature." @default.
