- W2185314458 abstract "In 2006 the IPHC began investigating the use of fi shery-recaptured archival tags in order to extend our electronic tagging program to study multi-year behavior of individual halibut and behavior of sublegal fi sh that have traditionally been considered too small to carry Pop-up Archival Transmitting tags. The program began with a captive holding experiment designed to develop surgical techniques for internal tag implantation and was followed in 2008 with a deployment of externally-affi xed tags in IPHC Regulatory Area 2B. An external mount was chosen because it was deemed easier to detect and recover than internally-implanted tags, but concerns regarding the impact of the mount on fi sh health and behavior prompted a suspension of further fi eld deployments until alternative attachment protocols could be studied. A total of 24 halibut ranging from 66-89 cm (26-35 in) fork length (FL) were collected during June, 2009, and placed in captivity at the Oregon Coast Aquarium along with eleven individuals approximately 55 cm FL that have been in captivity for approximately fi ve years. Two of the wild-caught fi sh died shortly after collection, presumably due to capture and transport stress. Thirty-one fi sh were tagged on November 4 and 5, with a variety of both internally-implanted and externally-affi xed tags. The fi sh will be regularly monitored for tagging effects over a period of at least one full year post-tagging. Additionally, 200 fi sh were captured south of Kodiak Island during September 2009, and tagged with either an internal (n=100 fi sh) or external (n=100) dummy archival tag, in addition to a wire opercular tag. These fi sh were released at their collection locations. Fishery recoveries will provide a long-term comparison of relative recovery probabilities associated with internal versus external tagging, integrating differences in fi sh mortality, tag shedding, and differential detection rates between tag treatments." @default.
