- W218538487 abstract "The frequency shifts produced by hydrostatic pressure were measured for four resonant mode systems NaC : Cu/sup +/, KBr : Li/sup +/, KI : Ag/sup +/ and CsI : Tl/sup +/. The experimental results were successfully characterized with an anharmonic oscillator model. Shifts were also measured for the tunnelling and excited state modes of KCl : Li/sup +/. The tunnelling mode (1.15 cm/sup -1/ for (Li/sup 6/)/sup +/ at zero strain) increases to 30 cm/sup -1/ at 1.1 percent strain. An extra low frequency transition provides direct evidence that the tunnelling levels in the lowest manifold are not equally spaced. It is found that the double harmonic oscillator model which has been used previously to describe the tunnelling levels does not adequately describe the pressure dependence of the five observed absorption lines in KCl : Li/sup +/. Analysis of the data indicates that the off-center Li/sup +/ ion goes on-center with application of a 0.5 percent strain. At 0.65 percent strain the KCl : Li/sup +/ spectrum is virtually identical to the KBr : Li/sup +/ spectrum at zero strain." @default.
