Excess Body Weight Associated with Sociodemographic Factors among Adolescents Living in a Brazilian Area with a Medium Human Development Index. JEPonline 2014;17(4):42-50. This study investigated the prevalence of excess body weight and its association with sociodemographic factors in adolescents 11 to 16 yrs of age living in a Brazilian city of the medium human development index. A descriptive cross-sectional analytical study was conducted. Anthropometric variables that were measured included body mass, height, and body mass index (BMI). The data were analyzed via the Mann-Whitney U Test, Chi-square test, and regression de Poisson. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. The girls had a higher BMI (P=0.007) than the boys. The prevalence of excess body weight was 26.5%. Adolescents living in urban area versus the rural area were 2.9 times more likely (95% CI=1.2 to 7.0) to have excess body weight. The findings indicate that the adolescents who live in urban areas have a greater need of the implementation of public health policies aimed at contributing to the reduction of high levels of obesity." @default.
