- W2185692207 abstract "Theinfluence ofgastric juice onironabsorption has beenstudied extensively inrecentyears. The absorption ofhaemoglobin ironisunaffected by achlorhydria (Biggs, Bannerman, andCallender, 1962) butinorganic ironisbetter absorbed inthe presence ofnormal gastric juice (Goldberg, Lochhead, andDagg,1963; Cook,Brown, andValberg, 1964). Ithasbeenshownthattheadministration of hydrochloric acidtopatients withachlorhydria will increase ironabsorption (Jacobs, Bothwell, and Charlton, 1964) butithasalsobeensuggested that othergastric juice constituents alsoplaya part. KoepkeandStewart (1964) andMurrayandStein (1967) haveproduced evidence fromexperiments in dogsandrats that thestomach secretes anabsorptionpromoting factor whichisincreased insomeconditions associated withhighironabsorption. Davis, Luke, andDeller (1966), ontheother hand, demonstrated aniron-binding protein innormal gastric juice whichwasabsent inpatients withhighiron absorption. Theysuggested thatthissubstance, whichtheycall gastroferrin, inhibits inorganic iron absorption andthat variations inits secretion provide aphysiological mechanism forregulating theuptake ofironfromthebody. Theobject ofthepresent study wastoseewhether normal humangastric juice influences theabsorption ofinorganic ironinhumansubjects withgastric atrophy whengiven together witha standard meal underconditions inwhichgastric pH ismaintained atneutrality. Clearevidence wasproduced that gastric juice promotes iron absorption evenwhenthe local effect ofacidiseliminated. No inhibitory effect wasobserved." @default.
