- W2185752904 abstract "Future is being shaped by massive global forces that include sizeable world population increases, endless south-north and east-west migration, endemic world poverty, inequities in the distribution of wealth and resources, scores of low-intensity regional wars, and the quiet desperation of billions of people living lives of deprivation, resentment and anger. Some social commentators are now speaking of disposable human resources. These global social, political, and economic forces must be considered as we pursue our efforts to understand, clarify, and define because they will ultimately shape and direct it, and overwhelm in importance the local forces at each workplace. To the extent that we choose to recognize and respond to these global forces, we can perhaps participate in choosing our future. To the extent we avoid them, our future may be determined by a limited number of corporate and government people whose visions and concerns are more narrow and self-serving. I would like to discuss the relationship of migration, poverty, and ethnocultural diversity to future worklife, especially the challenges and opportunities that emerge when people from different racial and cultural groups are required to work competitively in pursuit of wealth, security, status, power, and survival. Workers from different racial groups and cultural traditions are encountering one another in the contemporary workplace with greater frequency each day as global forces unfold. And in each microcosmic racial and cultural encounter, there are the macrocosmic issues of power, equality, opportunity, responsibility, justice, and survival. Ultimately, exploring the interface of migration, ethnocultural diversity, poverty, and future worklife raises some of the most vexing and important political, social, economic, and moral questions of our time: What are the rights of nations? What responsibilities do we have as nations, societies, and individuals toward one another? What are the virtues and risks of ethnocultural" @default.
