- W2185778813 abstract "Exposure tomicrogravity hasbeenassociated withseveral physiological changes inastronauts andcosmonauts, including anosteoporosis-like loss ofbonemass.In-flight measures usedtocounteract this, including intensive daily exercise reg- imens, havebeenonly partially successful inreducing theboneloss andintheprocess haveconsumed valuable worktime. Ifthis boneloss istobeminimized or,preferably, prevented, moreeffective treatment strategies arerequired. This, however, requires a greater understanding ofthemechanisms through which bonemetabolism isaffected bymicrogravity. Various research strategies havebeenusedtoexamine this problem, including invitro studies using bonecells andinvivo studies onhumansandrats. These havebeenconducted bothinflight andontheground, bystrategies thatproduce weightlessness tomimictheeffects ofmicro- gravity. Overall, themajority ofthestudies havefound that marked decreases ingravitation loading result intheloss ofbonemass. Theprocesses ofboneformation andboneresorption becomeuncoupled, with aninitial transitory increase inresorption accom- panied byaprolonged decrease information. Lossofbonemassisnotuniform throughout theskeleton, butvaries atdifferent sites depending onthetypeofboneandonthemechanical loadreceived. Itappears that theskeletal response isaphysiologic adapta- tiontothespace environment which, after long spaceflights orrepeated shorter ones, could eventually lead tosignificant reduc- tions intheability oftheskeletal tissues towithstand theforces ofgravity andincreased susceptibility tofracture." @default.
