- W2186110185 abstract "Wehaveexamined whether thehumancolon is abletoadaptitscapacity toreceive fluid, specifically, whether thecaecumandascendingcolon ('right colon') exhibited anyreservoir function. Healthy volunteers hadthecaecum intubated fromabovewithadevice that permitted intraluminal pressures toberecorded while fluids wereinstilled intothecaecum. Perfusates contained 'Tc-DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid) andvolumes ofthe right colonweredetermined bytwoplane scintigraphy using gammacameras. Different individuals received caecal infusions of154 mM NaCl(saline), anemulsion ofoleic acid (with bileacids andlecithin) ora 100mM solution ofmixedshort chain fatty acids. Each person waspretreated byintravenous saline (placebo), morphine sulphate (100,ug/kg) or naloxone (5.5 mgasabolus, followed by10[tg/ kg/min). Volumesoftheright colonwere smallest during oleic acidinfusion; morphine reversed theeffect ofluminal fatandallowed thecolontoaccommodate larger volumes. Transit fromtheright colon wasmorerapid for theemulsion ofoleic acid thanitwasforsaline orsolutions ofmixedshort chain fatty acids. Weconclude that theright colon mayactasa reservoir andthat this finction canbemodified bythenature ofthecontents andbypharmacological agents." @default.
