• W2186145287 abstract "Psychiatric journals have been in existence for almost as long as general medical publications have been available. The world of publishing has been transformed in the past 15 years as a result of open access - the availability of full text papers online free to view by the reader. A number of open access journals are now available online and these challenge the traditional subscription only approach to publishing. Open access is supported by large funding bodies in Europe and the US. Yet there are concerns that the new approach will lower standards as the payment for publication model might be perceived as creating a conflict of interest between the author and the reviewer or publisher. There is confusion about indexing and in particular the relationship to the impact factor. This metric is the most commonly used to measure journal impact but other are available to evaluate the impact of an individual author or group of authors or the impact of a single paper. Newer metrics take account of mention on social and traditional media. In recent years the submission process has been streamlined with the increasing use of automated systems. Despite these major changes in the approach of journals, the role of the editor and the editorial board remains unchanged. It is they who decide on the philosophy and direction of the journal. Peer reviewing is the hallmark of a quality journal and although this too has its critics, it cannot be dispensed with. It too has changed over time and some journals publish the peer reviews along with the accepted paper. The training of peer reviewers is an important step in ensuring high standards. Psychiatric journals should not lose sight of their purpose - to educate their readers, to stimulate debate and to advocate for our patients. Oggi, piu specificamente negli ultimi quindici anni, il mondo dell’editoria si e trasformato grazie all’innovazione dell’accesso libero sul web, con la disponibilita gratuita di documenti full text on-line. Le riviste online ad accesso libero costituiscono ormai una sfida per la modalita tradizionale dell’abbonamento. L’accesso libero e sostenuto economicamente, in Europa e negli Stati Uniti, da importanti enti di finanziamento. Tuttavia, ci si puo chiedere se questa nuova modalita di accesso possa abbassare gli standard di qualita delle riviste, ad esempio, nel caso in cui le modalita di pagamento per pubblicare costituiscono un eventuale conflitto di interessi tra autore e recensore, o editore. Esiste, inoltre, un’altra area problematica nel processo di indicizzazione, in particolare nell’individuazione del fattore di impatto. Questa metrica e utilizzata generalmente per misurare l’impatto di una rivista. Esistono pure altre metodologie di misurazione che valutano l’impatto di un singolo autore, di un gruppo di autori, o di un singolo documento. Metriche piu recenti tengono anche conto dei processi di riferimento presenti sui media sociali e tradizionali. Negli ultimi anni, il processo di valutazione di un articolo e stato ottimizzato grazie all’uso crescente di sistemi automatizzati. Nonostante questi importanti cambiamenti nelle modalita di funzionamento delle riviste, i ruoli del curatore e del comitato di redazione rimangono invariati. Sono essi che stabiliscono la filosofia e l’indirizzo della rivista. Il processo di revisione paritaria (peer review) e il marchio distintivo di una rivista di qualita - anche se questo processo e pure sotto la lente dei critici - una rivista non puo farne a meno. Pure il processo di revisione paritaria e variato nel tempo. Alcune riviste pubblicano, attualmente, l’articolo accettato allegando le revisioni paritarie. La formazione dei revisori rappresenta un passo importante nell’assicurare uno standard piu elevato nelle pubblicazioni. Infine, le riviste psichiatriche non dovrebbero perdere di vista i loro scopi - quelli di educare i loro lettori, di promuovere dibattiti e inoltre di difendere i diritti dei pazienti." @default.
