- W2186248364 abstract "the development of a large number of interactive systems. In most cases, these systems have failed to meet the performance objectives predicted during the initial design. This is particularly true for the large-scale general-purpose time-sharing systems. During this same period, the complexity of these systems has increased tremendously with the introduction of multiprogramming, multiprocessing, virtual memories, etc. It has thus become more difficult to understand the behavior of these systems in a qualitative sense, let alone quantitatively predict their performance. There are two major approaches to performance prediction: simulation and analytic modeling. Simulation is by far the more utilized technique, due to the ability to model and study systems of arbitrary complexity. The use of analytic models is limited by the lack of solutions for arbitrarily complex models. In recent years, however, a number of rather general models and lhethods of analysis have been developed which have greatly increased the range of applicability of analytic modeling. Interest in analytic. modeling is based on two potential advantages over sirnuation. First, the cost of developing and running simulations generally far exceeds the calculations required if an analytic solution is available. Second, simulation results are not easy to interpret with respect to cause and effect relationships between load and system paramenters and performance measures, while closed-form analytic solutions often yield such ihights. In this paper we will present an overview of developments in queueing theoretic modeling of interactive systems with an emphasis on recent advances. Our particular interest will be in “total system models” which allow the representation of the major system resources-central processing unit (CPU), main memory, and secondary storage subsystems-as well as user behavior. Section I1 is a brief survey of the types of models that have been studied. We start with the simplest possible models and end with the more sophisticated models being studied today. Section 111 describes some of the major results and techniques of analysis which are currently of interest. Published results describing the application of these techniques are described in Section IV." @default.
