- W2186393670 abstract "Radial segregation of particulate mixtures in rotating cylinders has been the subject of much interest in recent years. We present a systematic study varying both density and size of a single (or a few) tracer disks in a two-dimensional cylinder half-filled with identical balls, and find a complex interaction between size and density effects. Our tracer size ratios ranged from 1 to 16 and our density ratios ranged from 0.02 to 9.6 times that of the balls. We slowly rotated the cylinder, measuring the radial and angular positions of the tracers each cycle, and found several unexpected results. First, size alone did not cause a tracer to be found primarily at the cylinder perimeter (as is observed in equal mixtures) indicating the role of collective effects in the segregation of general mixtures. Second, we found that due to differences in the width of the radial position distribution for large tracers, size and density cannot be made to completely compensate in segregation effects. Third, the boundary in density-size parameter space demarcating the transition from segregation towards the center and segregation towards the perimeter shows a surprising non-monotonic behavior. Finally, the angle of cylinder rotation required to cause a tracer to cycle once depends only on its radial position not on its size or density, consistent with the notion that segregation is driven solely by the tracer’s depth within the avalanche." @default.
