- W2186423302 abstract "Abstract Socioeconomic, demographic and techno-logical changes as well as their implica-tions for public policies call for the produc-tion by governmental institutions for com-parable and updated information. Popu-lation-based information at the nationallevel is essential for planning and moni-toring health policies and their constitu-tional principles, such as universal andequitable access to healthcare. The Brazil-ian National Household Survey (PNAD) isa relevant data source for the knowledgeand monitoring of important aspects ofhealth status as well as of the policies di-rected toward the access and use of healthservices. In this paper, we present a briefhistory of the objectives, frequency andgeographical coverage of PNAD in Brazilover the past four decades. Emphasis isplaced on the main contents of its HealthSupplements in 1981, 1986, 1998 and 2003.The publication of technical and academictexts based on these data shows that theycan be used to monitor access and utiliza-tion of health services in different geo-graphical and socioeconomic contexts. Weargue in favor of an in-depth discussion onthe continuity of the historical series initi-ated in 1998, in face of the implementationin the near future of the Household Sur-veys Integrated System (SIPD) by IBGE.KeywordsKeywords: Household Surveys IntegratedSystem.
