- W2186435295 abstract "This paper reports the results of a survey experiment aimed at measuring the impact of framing effects on respondents’ stated attitudes toward international trade. Respondents given an anti-trade frame in the survey question, linking trade to the possibility of job losses, were 19% less likely to favor increasing trade with other countries than were those who were asked the same question with no clearly biased framing. Respondents who were given a pro-trade frame, suggesting that trade can lead to lower prices for goods, were no more likely to express support for trade than those in the no frame group. The results suggest that recent concerns about widespread opposition to international trade among voters have been overstated due to anti-trade bias in the framing of questions posed in the standard surveys. More important perhaps, the experiment shows that not all types of respondents are equally susceptible to framing effects. In particular, the responses of less-educated and less-skilled individuals are far more sensitive to framing effects than those of highly educated and skilled individuals. Research that relies upon available survey data to gauge attitudes toward trade and their determinants appears to rest on a very unstable foundation. If there is any anti-trade bias in the specific questions generating the attitudinal data, opposition to trade will be significantly overestimated across all respondents and especially for lesseducated and less skilled individuals." @default.
