At that time, in Vienna, psychotherapy was influenced strongly by Freud's rather reductionistic psychological theories. This situation created an atmosphere of spiritual barrenness in psychotherapy in Europe. It was not until the late 1960s that the spiritual factor began to be reintroduced systematically in psychology and psychotherapy via transpersonal psychology (Sutich, 1969).
