- W2186502524 abstract "Studyoftherelationship between mental health, psychological handicap, andindustrial conditions hasdeveloped considerably inimportance during thelast 5years. Wartime investigations connected withtheoccupational adaptation ofdischarged service menweredescribed byLewisandSlater (1942), Lewis(1943), andGuttmanandThomas (1944), andthefindings ofFraser- (1947) onthe incidence ofneurosis infactory populations andits association withabsenteeism arewellknown. The effects ofsuchdisability onworking efficiency areby nomeansclear. Studies infactories (Markowe and Barber, 1952; 1953) havenotconfirmed thewidely heldnotion thatindividuals whohaveaneurotic, handicap often produce less thantheaverage worker, though they showed that those withpoorintelligence tended tohavealower output. Ithasfrequently beenasserted thatneurotic workers aremorepronetochange their jobthan those enjoying normal mental health. Reasons for leaving employment may, however, besocial and economic aswell aspsychological (Long, 1951). In thepresent inquiry anattempt ismadetorelate labour turnover tomental health, byexamining the association between length ofstay inanewjoband theincidence ofneurotic disability. Thestudyis based onunskilled workers intwolarge factories; menandwomenareconsidered separately." @default.
