- W2186536660 abstract "Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women as well as men in Western nations. The disease process is probably the same for both, although pre menopausal women are relatively protected from coronary heart disease (CHD), an effect that has been related to estrogen levels. The CHD rates of premenopausal women are well below those of men of the same age; after menopause, women's risk for CHD approxi mates that in men, with a delay of about 10 years by comparison of age.1,2 This 10 year delay is addressed in the 1993 U.S. National Cholesterol Education Program's (NCEP) adult diagnosis and treatment algorithm.3 Females 55 years and older or who experi enced premature menopause and are not tak ing estrogen replacement therapy, as well as males 45 years and older, add the risk factor age to their risk profile. Other NCEP posi tive risk factors are a family history of pre mature CHD, current cigarette smoking, hypertension, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level, and diabetes mel litus. A high HDL cholesterol level is a negative CHD risk factor. The addition of menopause status to risk evaluation evinces an emerging research em phasis on cardiovascular risk in women. In" @default.
