- W2186543206 abstract "INTRODUCTION Membrane is an intervening phase separating two phases and acting as an active or passive barrier to the transport of matter or heat between phases. Heterogeneity[1] of membrane is due to pores which are discontinuities in solids impervious phase and it allows selective transport of some chemical species. The application of membrane is dictated by the geometrical traits and morphology of pores. These Membranes are popularly known as Nuclear Track Filters[2] (NTFs). The discovery of (NTFs) came as a spin off from the track phenomenon in SSNTDs Price and Walker found that the damage trails in insulating materials, caused by the ionization as a result of the passage of traversing heavy charged particles, may be revealed by chemical etching to form conical pores. This discovery made it possible to create well defined porous membranes with pores in the general size range which is inferred to exist in biological membranes. NTFs appeared in the market with uniform pore size, under the trade name of “Nuclepore” from Nucleopore Corporation, USA[3]. These filters were produced by irradiation of plastic foils of 6-20 m thickness with the fission fragments of specific energy 0.8 MeV/n, and the latent damage produced were enlarged by chemical etching in aqueous NaOH. The practical applications of nuclear tracks in a variety of fields have since largely been exploited." @default.
