Outof5641workerswho were exposedtoanimalsat 137laboratory animal facilities inJapan,23-1%had one or more allergic symptoms relatedto laboratory animals. Thecommonest symptom was rhinitis. About70% ofLAA subjects developed symptoms duringtheirfirst threeyears of exposure. Atopy(pastandfamilyhistory), the numberofanimalspecieshandled,and the timespentinhandling correlated significantly withthedevelopment ofLAA as didsome types ofjob.A closerelation betweennasalsymptomsandexposure torabbits andbetweenskin symptoms and exposure to ratswere found. LAA subjectsdevelopedsymptoms most quickly torabbits. Laboratory animalallergy (LAA) isreceiving increased attention anditisnow believed that many persons suffer fromallergic symptoms related to laboratory animals. Laboratory animalallergy has beenrecognised as a health problem forthose who workwithlaboratory animals inJapanbutthere are fewepidemiological surveys ofLAA withlarge numbersofsubjects. Manystudies on LAA havebeencarried outinthe UnitedKingdomandtheUnitedStates.
