• W2186635732 abstract "Background: Patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (Type 2 DM) are at greater cardiovascular morbidity and mortality than the general population, even in the absence of hypertension. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), which is an ominous prognostic sign and an independent risk factor for cardiac events, is often present in type 2 DM patients. Objectives: First, to evaluate the prevalence of LVH in selected patients with normotensive type 2 DM (blood pressure < � 40/90 mmHg) not receiving any antihypertensive drugs, and second to relate these finding to pathogenic factors and clinical risk markers in type 2 DM. Methods: This was a descriptive cross–sectional study. Echocardiography was used to investigate 9� subjects with normotensive Type 2 DM (were performed by M–Mode two dimensional echocardiography) to assess the prevalence of LVH and to relate these finding to pathogenic factors and clinical risk markers by multiple logistic linear regression analysis. Results: Of the 9� patients with normotensive Type 2 DM (40 men, 5� women) in whom left ventricular mass could be successfully assessed, 29 had LVH (prevalence 3� .9%, (25 % men, 37.3 % women). The left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was significantly correlated with HbAC levels(r = 0.75� , P < 0.00� ) and was independent of other risk factors.(OR � 0.8 , (2.27–5� .57); P = 0.003). Other variables with a positive correlation but not independent factors were waist circumference (r = 0.592, P< 0.00� ) and urine albuminuria (r = 0.53, P < 0.00� ). Conclusion: In patients with normotensive type 2 DM, LVH is more common and is significantly related to HbAC levels. These findings may be related to waist circumference and urine albuminuria. The high prevalence of LVH strengthens the case for echocardiographic screening in normotensive type 2 DM to identify high risk patients who might benefit from aggressive cardiovascular intervention." @default.
