- W2186673936 abstract "SYNOPSIS In10patients withParkinsonism, treatment withL-dopa was associated with a rise in theskinconductance level anditsfluctuations, an increased electromyographic activity inthe frontalis muscle, andwithfaster reaction times. Thechange ofskinconductance inresponsetoa loudnoise alsoincreased anditshabituation totherepetition ofthestimulus was delayed. One patient developed aschizophreniform psychosis andshowed high arousal andabsent habituation. It ispossible that dopamine isthetransmitter associated withthearousal reaction andthat itplays a partinthepathogenesls ofschizophrenia. L-dopa hasgained animportant place inthe treatment ofParkinson's disease since its successfuluseinhighdosage byCotzias etal.(1969). A numberofclinicians (Godwin-Austen etal., 1969; Yahretal., 1969) noticed an'alerting' or 'arousing' effect ofthis agent whichwasnot always related tothedegree ofclinical improvementintheprimary symptoms ofParkinson's disease. Psychiatric evaluation revealed an improvement indepressive symptoms among somepatients withParkinsonism, butthe administration ofL-dopa waseffective inthe treatment ofretarded butnotofagitated depression (Bunney etal., 1969; Bunneyetal., 1971). Concurrently, themental side effects ofL-dopa therapy werenotedtobeirritability, sleeplessness, nervousness, agitation, toxicdelirium, hallucinations and, muchlessfrequently, depression (Knopp, 1970). Cases ofhypomania and paranoid psychosis weredescribed byO'Brien etal.(1971). Mostofthese side-effects maybe products ofincreased arousal. A recent study (Marshetal., 1971) hasreevaluated thepsychological effects ofL-dopa using 32patients taking L-dopa compared with matched normalcontrols onnodrugtherapy. Themethods employed toassess 'alerting' or 'arousal' included tests ofshort-range memory," @default.
