- W2186720797 abstract "Studyobjectives -(1)Toassess theextent towhichdeathofaspousecausesexcess mortality bycontrolling fortheeffects of confounding andothersourcesofbias. Threepossible sources ofbiasareconsidered: accidents common tospouses, commonsocioeconomic environment, and common lifestyles. (2)Toassess thedurationspecific effects ofdeathofaspouse onmortality. Designandsetting - Prospective study ofmortality inFinlandamongall35-84 yearold marriedFinnishmen and women (1580000people). Baseline sociodemographic measurementfromthe1985 censusrecords.Followup by computerised recordlinkage todeathcertificate registers fortheperiod1986-91 (about116000deaths, ofwhichalmost 10000amongthebereaved) usingpersonal identification codes. Results - (1)Aftercontrolling forconfounding effects, excess mortality was17% inmen and6%inwomen.(2)Excessmortality washigher forshortdurations than longdurations ofbereavement. (3)Excess mortality after bereavement washigher in men thanwomen. Conclusions -Controlling forconfounding doesnotseemtohaveacrucial modifying effect ontherelationship betweenspousal bereavement andmortality. Itseemsthat deathofa spousehasa causaleffect on mortality. However, although spousal bereavementisamajorstressful life event, thiscausaleffect seemstoberelatively smallandshortlived.
