- W2186768102 abstract "For an accurate system level electromagnetic (EM) modeling of digital IC packages and PC boards, a new methodology is deveIoped combing electromagnetic and circuit simulators. The EM modeling of geometrical details in the IC's structures based on a full-wave finite element method provides accurate equivalent circuits which are incorporated in a system level circuit simulator. This circuit simulator results in HSPICE type of RLC circuits which are then analyzed in time domain to compute switching noise on any designate places. Power and ground noise (also known as AI noise) is a serious signal integrity concern in high-speed microprocessor circuit board applications. This problem continues to grow as microprocessor speeds increase. These speeds almost double with each new microprocessor generation, yet in the personal computer market it is unacceptable to allow the design costs to increase by a corresponding amount. More effective and lower cost decoupling solutions are therefore needed to minimize the impact AI noise on system cost. This paper presents a technique to effectively analyze the power distribution networks of complex highspeed digital systems. It is intended that this technique will be used to evaluate and optimize the decoupling capacitors being incorporated to limit AI noise. The paper shows how the technique can be used to compute the distribution of voltages in the printed circuit board's power and ground planes. This voltage distribution will be used to optimize the placement of decoupling capacitors and the pinout of any component packages. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach is shown on an analysis of a fairly complex printed circuit board system, The effect of switching noise is simulated on the power and ground pins while its effect on timings, and consequently the maximum attainable frequency, is simulated on the signal pins.
