- W2186869738 abstract "This paper chronicles the mitigation of a severe case of inductive interference by using railroad signalling equipment designed for electrified railroad territory. In 1983, Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) agreed to permit Philadelphia Electric Company (PECo) to build and operate a 230 kV transmission line on a seven-mile section of main line in Suburban Philadelphia. Although this transmission line is designed for a maximum load of 1,418 MVA steady-state, it soon became apparent that 600 MVA was sufficient to interrupt service and damage Conrail's signal facilities. The solution was to provide a low resistance path to ground for the 60Hz interference currents. existing signal systems operating in electric propulsion territory provide this separate path, it was realized that such equipment could be used to resolve the induction problem in the subject non-electrified railroad application. After the new system was installed in 1990, field measurements were taken with a transmission line load of 828 MVA. These measurements were used to predict the performance of the new signal system at the maximum projected transmission line loading of 1418 MVA steady-state. Based on the calculated results, it was concluded that the new signal system will operate satisfactorily at maximum load since none of the noise tolerance levels of the signal equipment would be exceeded.
